The Santa
Barbara Jazz Society welcomes The Kristin Korb Quartet on Sunday
February 14th from 1:00 to 4:00 at SOhO, 1221 State Street in downtown
Santa Barbara. This will be a special Valentine's Day program.
There are
many bass players who “sing” as they perform—that occasionally audible
hum that’s heard as they play their solos. Imagine a player who sings
in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and plays the
bass with the authority and swing of the great Ray Brown. With these
and many other strong influences, Kristin Korb has created a style and
presence all her own. Kristin tours internationally as a performer,
clinician, and guest artist with numerous jazz ensembles. While
studying privately with jazz bass icon Ray Brown, he arranged for her
first recording with his trio, "Introducing Kristin Korb", on Telarc
Records. Her new release, "In The Meantime", features her innovative
arrangements of jazz standards with the help of jazz greats Bob
Sheppard, Nick Mancini, Llew Matthews, Steve Barnes and Larry Koonse.
When she’s not on the road with her trio (featuring Llew Matthews and
Ryan Korb), she’s on the faculty at the University of Southern
California and Azusa Pacific University.
Born and raised in Montana, Ms. Korb grew up in a musical family and
often presented concerts with her three younger brothers. Her passion
for music eventually led to a bachelor’s degree in music education
from Eastern Montana College. In 1992, she moved to San Diego to hone
her bass skills with bass professor Bertram Turetzky, earned a
master’s degree from the University of California (San Diego), and
became one of the busiest bassists in San Diego. Now based in Los
Angeles, when she’s not on the road with her trio (featuring Llew
Matthews and Ryan Korb), she’s on the faculty at the University of
Southern California and Azusa Pacific University.
These are
times of change. News reports tell the story of people's lives shifting.
We're trying to hold on to what we have, hoping for a better future, and
wondering what to do in the meantime. But life is happening, right now.
Why worry about the unknown? This doesn't have to be a stressful time,
biting our fingernails, waiting for things to happen. Kristin Korb's new
CD: In The Meantime is meant to comfort, encourage, and elevate your
spirit to be present in the world. It explores the adventures that can
find you if you are open to them, in the meantime. What are you waiting
for? |
